I spent the day with my International Ladies Club exploring the Indian Mandir in Houston. It was magical! The temple is built out of hand carved marble from India. As soon as you drive up to this place you feel as if you’ve left Houston and stepped into India. We had a tour guide show us around and teach us about the significance of their saints and the carvings covering the walls. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take photos inside so I cannot show you how glorious it is.
The property also has an exhibit where you can read about India and the origins of Hinduism. Did you know India is responsible for the first university and first hospital?
We also had lunch at their little cafe. There is also a little grocery store where you can buy Indian foods and sweets. Lunch was buffet style and it was very good.
I love learning about different cultures and religions. I always find similarities in the general beliefs of most religions. I believe if we all made more of an effort to learn about our differences we would all be more compassionate toward each other.
You cannot show your knees or your shoulders in the temple. That’s why I have a tee shirt tied up over my maxi dress. You also have to remove your shoes before entering the temple.
It’s hard to believe we have such a beautiful structure right here in Houston. I always say Houston is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the nation. So go and get out and explore!!
The temple address is 1150 Brand Lane Stafford, Texas 77477
